Artist Statement:
I believe that dreaming and hoping are the same as resigning to your fate, it just sounds more optimistic. When you start hoping, at least in my view of hoping, you stop trying. You start thinking along the lines of, “I hope things will change.”. To get anything you want to be done done, you have to work. My picture starts in the middle, with the faded picture of myself lying on the ground surrounded by various items. On the left there is a hammer and saw, and on the right there is a Chinese textbook and a calculator. While lying there, my arms are bound behind my back and there are a pair of snow goggles over my eyes along with a watch on my forehead. It shows that, if you don’t try, you can just get bogged down and restrained by work, symbolized by the hammer and saw, school, symbolized by the Chinese textbook and calculator, and time and schedules, symbolized by the watch. There are also a string of clouds spewing from my head and rising up, symbolizing that at that point I am just dreaming, and since I am not working to get my dream that’s all it will be, a dream. The more defined section of the image is of myself now standing up, having cast aside my restraints (the goggles and scarf) and reaching for the highest dream cloud. It shows that to get what you want you have to cast aside your restraints, the binding scarf, and misconceptions, the goggles, and get it yourself.
