What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Self portrait pablo

Artist Statement: I don't really know who I am, and I don't think I ever will know, but as John Locke said we are made up of our experiences, and I know what I have experienced. As a child the idea of god appealed to me because it was a simple and easy explanation for what i could not yet understand. As i got older I found that my parents did not particularly fallow or believe in the religions that their own parents wanted them to pursue. Their families were: on my mom's side christian, and on my dad's side jewish. My secular upbringing led me to not have belief in religion so the star of david and the cross do not represent my religious belief, they simply represent where i came from. The image of myself sitting on top of my head represents my belief in myself instead of religion. When i have hardship or need help there is no god to help me, I am my own god and I will do what ever I need to do in life. I will do things not because I fear the judgement of god, but for the good of myself and all others around me. I have a love for all nature around me which is represented as the ocean. My love for music is shown as musical notation. Musical notes in themselves are symbols; they represent pitches and rhythms, but in my portrait they represent my personal relationship with music and the world of sound. Exactly who I am is unclear but what makes up my identity is present in symbolic representation.

Trail and error: I created an entire project before this, but it did not have symbolic meaning. I looked at the rubric up and down and realized it was not D material. I destroyed this project and started over.
