What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Dylan's Trial and Error Writing

Throughout the production of my self-portrait, I had to go through an elongated process of trial and error to achieve the favored outcomes. Apart from taking nearly forty sample pictures to express my message, I individually went through these pictures to find the image that delivered my point most clearly. Editing the image in Photoshop also proved to be a very tedious process, as I had to make sure everything was clear, and that there was just enough contrast, but not too much, in order to provide a powerful image. I then went through a series of filters and decided the cut-out filter would work best with my layout. I pondered the possibilities of putting in an eagle to symbolize my renewal and courage in the face of challenges, but decided the overall image would be more successful without any layering. In the dark room, I had to test out the effects of letting different amounts of light fall on a sample sheet of paper, and I decided it looked best at a time of nine seconds. After developing my photograph, I knew my trial and error throughout the project proved successful.
