What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Aiyana's Collage, Philosophy, and Artist statement

Philosophy:

Life is an experiment during which you create yourself. There is no set way in which one should go about doing this, but there are accepted rituals within society that people believe you should follow. In reality they are not the only way to do things. It can be good to, in a sense, break from the norm of society, and extend your experiences beyond what it allows you. In order to live freely and define yourself as an individual one must rip through these boundaries that constrict us.

Artists Statement:

This is the wall of society, and through the window you see the people of the world captured within. Society has created pathways, rituals, things that are accepted as the right or normal thing to do, which I represented through the pictures that make up this wall. Within the wall the people are in black and white, because I wanted a sense of formality, because although everyone is different we perform the same tasks throughout life. “Health in numbers” “comfort in numbers” “power in numbers” “humanity in numbers” “knowledge in numbers” and “strength in numbers” are what these people feel, but there are other ways to gain health knowledge, strength etc. to discover these ways and in a sense define yourself as an individual in the world one must break from these ideas and the “norm” of society. I showed this through the one person breaking from the rest, he first turns a different color (representing his realization of what he must do also shown through the gears turning at the top), then begins to explore (testing the limits) and discovering new ideas breaks through the wall (in other words discovering himself and becoming an individual). I crossed out the “last” and wrote “first” on the 4th panel because this is the real beginning of your life.
