What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Artist Statement:

As our lives unfold, we are unsure what lies ahead. Who will we become, what will we do? In all this though, it is important to be mindful of what we leave behind. As we grow, from a small little seedling, we begin to imagine, create, and learn from the world around us. Other’s words inspire us, and shape who we become on the next page. Each day holds importance, as it is the days that make up our lives. We need to devour each and every day, making the most of what is in front of us. While each day may be a mere number on a calendar, they add up, and it is this day that we must eat up every moment of. As we continue to grow, how does our imagination better the world, and us. We grow with every change we make, affecting our surroundings and at the same time, the many layers of our self. Life is like a puzzle. As we complete turn after turn, it is from this that we thrive. Figuring out the decisions of life is how we make an impact. But it is important not to get too caught up in the intricacies, and instead use life as a time to discover, to “wonder and wander”. To see the forest not for its trees, but for the amazing forest that it is. Life is time to be creative, to engage, and to come up with your best ideas. It is time to think beyond ourselves, “US”, and see the world for everything in it. Each being has something unique and different to offer, and we are not superior in every way. Going through life, it is important to think about the mark we are leaving behind us- the unique, one of a kind mark that will be there long beyond you. What is the mark we leave on ourselves, on our surroundings, and on our culture? Life is our moment to take flight, to do great things. It is a time to look back and say, “I did it”. What is the shadow that we leave behind. It follows us around in each and everything we do, and it is this shadow that defines you, way beyond you. As we move into the future, what is our past?

Every step we take, we leave a shadow behind us. What this shadow represents is up to us, and how we live our lives. I believe in making an impact on this world in large, and small ways. What is the shadow that you leave behind? We can all imagine. Life is about looking forward and imagining what could be, but also about looking behind you to see what was. All of us should be concerned with two things: what we are leaving behind, and what lies ahead, with every single step we take.
