What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Jon Lesser's Final Collage and Artist Statement

Please ignore the black on the edges of the collage, it is not part of it.

Artist Statement: In the world that we live in today, I believe that we have fallen out of touch with our planet. All we tend to care about is going as fast as possible in any way imaginable. We abuse nature and take whatever we please. We need to return to the way the world once was. We are constantly at war with each other, when each of us is so greatly alike. Our planet is getting hotter and I feel as though our efforts have been minimal. The journey back to the Golden Age of our environment will be long and challenging, like migrating across a desert or sailing the Atlantic, I am not denying that. However, if we can band together as a species while still holding on to the creativity of the individual, then the human race cannot be stopped from reaching its ultimate goals. The hands as leaves and grapes all grasping for the diamond represent how humankind has abused nature. The Empire State Building represent our drive for expansion to the point of over-expansion. The hand picking up the gold coin represents our constant greed. The digital tunnel represents our technological growth and the speed at which we live. The scene of war represents the constant fighting on our planet. The road, bridge, desert migration, ships sailing the ocean, and the Great Wall all represent the journey back to the way our planet once was. These images show the difficulty of the journey, but also the fulfillment. The sweating man with the temperature gauge represents how our planet is heating up and that it affects everyone individually. Therefore we need to make our own individual efforts. The positive results of these individual efforts will combine into one harmonious triumph over the problems facing our world today, at which point we will be able to return to a better time when man was truly in touch and peaceful with nature, represented by the images of nature.

  1. I like all the symbolism in each of your pictures; it really summarizes the modern day world.
