What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Collage

Artist Statement:

On the lower left side I put two pictures of people with affliction and one picture of happy living people that have fun. It shows that there are people who have fun, but that there are also a lot of afflictions. I put two pictures of affliction and only one picture of happiness to stress that there is more affliction than happiness in the world. As I wrote in my philosophy I consider life to be like a long road. Starting with the birth and ending with the death, the road is the actual life. I put it in the center of my collage because all the other things are happening during life. That’s why I put the “life” in the middle and the things that are happening around it. I put the dead end sign next to the road because in life you often find yourself in dead ends. The money on the road, next to the sign is there because it is often the reason why you end up in dead ends.

Because in big cities you have a lot of opportunities, I put the picture of the city at night on the collage. To me flying is a symbol for freedom and freedom is very important for the individual, so the flying man is to represent freedom. The money in each of the corners is supposed to show that money is an important thing in our modern world and that almost everything is about money. On the lower left side I put a man talking to a lot of journalists. It seems that he is a politician. I put it there because on one side there is affliction and poverty, and on the other side there are politicians talking about how they want to help the poor people, but there is never happening that much.

The different layers in the background are to show that life has different times.

My Philosophy:

Life is like a long journey, comparable to a long road starting with birth and ending with death, with many barriers and borders. You have to cross them if you want to succeed and get to know other things. You also have to be opened for any changes. You can make almost everything if you really want to and try it. However, many times you will find yourself in dead ends.

There are big differences between countries. People living in 3rd world countries, can’t do everything like we do. They have so many afflictions while we are living a nice and happy life. Some people can help you while others only want to take advantage from you. There are also people not appreciating what they have while others would give everything to have it.

Freedom is very important, but not everyone has it. Money is an important thing in our modern world on which we depend.
