What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

James Turits Collage and Artist/Philosophical Statements

Artist’s Statement:

My collage represents my philosophy on life and our bodies. The overlapping card background represents how life can change on how one gambles and takes risks in their life. The school of fish represents how the body works together. It surrounding Pangaea explains that the world worked as one and has separated over the years. The three stages of time explain a quote that I believe in, “The past is dead and the future is an illusion. All that matters is the present and what you do now.” I’m not sure where it is from but I try to live my life by it. The burning crown shows how people become corrupt through power and should be relinquished from said power and new pure life should come in. The trouble and “I AM DANGER” is my thoughts on how everyone needs a little risk in their lives or they aren’t truly living. The netting in the tundra represents how some people are trapped unfairly and have no chances of escaping to better lives. The glowing red sphere is the heart and shows how it can stand out in at any time. We all have hearts, some more than others, and it can show how one truly feels about something or someone. We should help people discover those hidden feelings and hopefully learn about the feelings hidden The icy leg represents how people can be cold and tough and over time melt away and show what is inside them. These aspects of life make up the human body. Though it isn’t necessarily pretty, this is how life is and nothing will change it.

Philosophical Statement:

The philosophy is that everyone controls their own life. They have the ability to change it to how they see fit. Some people take more advantage of this than others. Those who dwell on the past cannot move forward in life and those who think too much of their future cannot focus on the present. One should focus on their life in the present and only look back into the past to learn from the choices one made. I try to live by this philosophy as much as I can and think that others should think about it as well.
