Artist Statement:
Having a memory that one can recall is something that is unique to human beings. In each and every one of us, no matter how hard or dark a situation/life is, there are moments of happiness one can summon. I choose to collage these photographs from other people into my self portrait to make this point. Over the past year or so I have been collecting photographs and it has been in the back of my mind to find an art project to use them in. These photographs range from the early 1900s to present day. A photograph to me is not only a piece of art, but it is part of a past memory, which you can revisit just by looking at the photo. It is my hope that a viewer looking at this collection of images can relate to them on some level, despite their age, race, or cultural orientation. Surrounding my profile are patterns and shapes that can also be interrupted/shared in different ways. To me these represent the dark or hard times people can face. One of the influences on my work is 60s pop art, which I incorporated this into the overall design.
Personal Philosophy:
I believe that no matter how dull an environment some one is in they can be colorful and interesting on the inside. One of my personal philosophies is that you should always try to hold onto your good memories and you should try so see the good in people. Mostly everyone in the world has fond memories of the past. By going into these memories it should be able to bring you into a better and happier state/place of mind. These memories can and will be with you forever specially the better ones. From the bad memories you can drawn for them what you would do better in the future. For me whenever I am put into a bad or unhappy situation I like to go back into my memory bank to feel better.
Hey Lea! I really like your collage. I understand the point you're trying to convey and your layout of the collage was original. I like that most of the pictures inside are colorful to convey happy thoughts and the patterns on the outside are black and white to convey bad situations.
